The railroad was built to carry ore from the Clifton Mines (located off the Tooley Pond Rd. 4 miles south of Degrasse) to the mainline of the Rome, Watertown & Ogdensburg Railroad at East De Kalb. This route was chosen as ore and pig iron were already being hauled by team to the station at East De Kalb.
